The flag of China is quite famous. It consists of a red field with a large yellow star in the top left corner. To its right, four smaller stars can be seen in a crescent. What do these stars actually stand for?
The big star symbolizes the Chinese Communist Party. This party has ruled the so-called People’s Republic of China since 1949, when Mao Zedong ‘s troops won the Chinese civil war. Chinese nationalists were then expelled from the country and a new flag was adopted. In addition to the ‘Communist’ large yellow star in the upper left corner, four more stars were devised. These symbolize the four social classes: the workers, the peasants, the petty bourgeoisie and the patriotic entrepreneurs. The color red refers to the communist party and has also been the traditional color of the Han Chinese, the largest ethnic group in China, since the seventeenth century.
According to modern explanations, the four stars to the right of the large star symbolize the country’s various national minorities.
